Task 9: What do you want to be (True-False) Read the text. Then decide if the statements are true (T) or false (F). WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE? The only careers guidance meeting I ever had took place when I was fifteen. It was a small group meeting with my classmates Douglas, Alison and Monty. The careers advice officer, Miss Simpson, turned to me first and asked me in a posh accent what I wanted to do with my life. I really wanted to be a football player, but there was no way I was going to say that in the interview, so I'd spent days trying to think of a suitable job. I knew what I didn't want: long hours, low pay or anything too dangerous so I asked my dad for advice. He thought for a while and then said, "Well, son, you're good at saving your pocket money and you're good at mental arithmetic, so you could become an accountant: regular hours, a good salary, good career prospects..." And so when Miss Simpson turned her shiny glasses in my direction, I cleared my throat and said, "I want to be an accountant, Miss." "An accountant? Why?" "Good salary, good career prospects, Miss." Much to my relief, she smiled, "Excellent choice a well-paid, respectable profession!" Douglas said he wanted to be a lawyer just like his dad. Alison explained she would love to become a vet because she loved horses And so it came to Monty. He was a boy you didn't argue with. Not the brightest kid in the class, but definitely one of the toughest. His real name was Bruce, so Miss Simpson politely asked him, "What do you want to be, Bruce?" Monty kept his eyes on the desk and quietly said one word: "Drummer!" Miss Simpson looked puzzled. "Excuse me, Bruce. I didn't quite catch that." Monty bit a fingernail violently and frowned. "Drummer" he said, slightly louder. "Drummer?" repeated Miss Simpson, not sure she'd understood correctly. Monty looked at her as if he thought she might be laughing at him, "Aye, drummer!" She laughed nervously. "I'm awfully sorry, I don't understand" Monty looked at her as if she was a complete idiot, reached down and opened his schoolbag. There was complete silence. I stopped breathing. What was he going to do? Suddenly, he pulled out two drumsticks from the bag and played a fast drum solo on the desk. The noise was shocking. Miss Simpson sat back as if she'd been hit Monty explained, "I want to be a c ea drummer in a rock group!" Miss Simpson was at a loss for words, "Oh, my... I mean, it's... what? em... interesting. but why?" Monty, his eyes wide open, leaned towards her and paused for a second. Then, loud and clear, he said, "I like hitting things!" I'm not an accountant, and Monty never became a drummer in a rock group: he's a bricklayer. Not what he wanted, maybe, but at least be still gets to hit things. 1 The writer of this story was given careers advice in several meetings at school.
